Why do seals slap their bellies?

Seals are not just cute ocean dwellers—they are also fierce competitors. When it comes to defending their territory or asserting dominance, male seals put on quite a show. One of their most dramatic displays is belly slapping. By forcefully hitting their bellies with their flippers, they create loud, echoing sounds that serve as a warning to rivals. This behavior signals strength, confidence, and a willingness to fight if challenged.

In the wild, dominance is everything. The louder and more impressive the slap, the greater the seal’s chance of securing mates and controlling prime beach space. It’s nature’s way of saying, "Back off, this spot is mine!"
